Joy is a very important emotion in the life of a man, it is a feeling of great pleasure and happiness caused by something exceptionally good or satisfying. Joy is something of utmost importance to the Christian and non-christian, it’s emphasis in the scriptures both old and new testament is quite refreshing. We are commanded to be joyful. Philippians 4:4; 3:1. Psalms 3:3. 32:11; 9:2.; 100:1.
To The Wounded Christian
Joyfulness or being joyful is not a matter of discipline or will. You cannot force yourself to be joyful. It is an emotion or feeling because you don’t have an immediate control over it. You cannot snap your fingers and decide to feel something. Biblical joy is the very emotion of salvation, it is the joy of seeing, knowing, loving and trusting Jesus Christ. It is the product of the Holy Spirit in us ,Galatians 5:22.
Joy is a glorious gladness and deep delight in the person of Jesus Christ. Biblical joy or Christian joy is something that continues through the stage of mourning, suffering, the passing through of difficult circumstances. It is not something that dies out when faced with challenges or overwhelming situations. Philippians 2:17.
Joy is not circumstantial where we are joyful only when we feel that God is good. It is not occasional or periodic. Christian joy continues as long as we key in continually to the source or giver of it. The key to Christian joy is found in the person of Jesus Christ, Philippians 4:4 that was why paul the apostle remained joyful in the face of shipwreck, hunger, perils, stripes etc. Christian joy should not be confused with happiness or peace because peace is just a state of tranquility, freedom from disturbance.
When believers carry out self reflections or examinations, we do not seem to bother or point to the joylessness in our lives as an important thing that needs attention. Most times we pay attention to other things, pouring ourselves into joyless services, blindly working and flagellating ourselves for our undisciplined discipleship. Joyfulness is of paramount importance to a Christian as it protects us from religion, temptations, etc. When we sense a loss of joy from our lives, it is a signal to one or some of many other things.
Joylessness could arise as a result of:
The lack of a devotional life which leads to no growth, no fortress against attacks from the enemy.
Stagnancy and redundancy.
No communion or fellowship with the Holy Spirit.
An unthankful spirit.
Dreaming outside God’s will.
Comparing ourselves with others.
Impure thoughts, unresolved conflicts.
Disobeying the Holy Spirit, not regarding Him, not obeying God’s word.
It could also be as a result of many other things not listed here.
Joylessness should serve as a check to Christians. When Christ joy from within is absent, it is imperative for a serious minded believer to put to stop all other encumbering things and check, let’s such a one falls into religion or empty service with no life. Joylessness could open the door to temptation to source for other things to fill the void or emptiness inside, it could be movies, books, music or activities which with time doesn’t even fill the void. As Christians our full joy comes only from being satisfied in Christ.
