Hymn Challenge 2019

Day 11

Written by Shalom Adedokun

The day was bright and gay yet it felt dark and dreary.

I watched as parishioners trooped into the sanctuary smiling brightly as if they had no care in the world.

I sat down as the pastor started preaching. I was so lost in thought till a hand tapped me jolting me out of my reverie. I didn’t even realize that I was staring blankly into space.

I turned to meet the face of my mum as she looked into my eyes. Silently and sweetly she started singing the chorus of a popular hymn.

It felt crazy.

We were in church and were supposed to be listening to the preacher but here I was listening to my mum sing to me in the middle of a service.

“Leave it there, Leave it there” she sang staring at me as if she could see my soul.

“Just take your burden to the Lord and leave it there” she continued as i watched her with my mouth agape.

“Who does this?” I thought to myself as I continued to watch her as if she had suddenly developed two heads.

“How on Earth did She know I was extremely worried?” I questioned myself.

“If you trust and never doubt” she sang on holding my hands.

Okay this was it
This was the problem.

“How did she expect me to trust God again after all I went through?” I asked myself as I withdrew my hands

“Trust? Trust! of all things” I pondered.

It was one thing to trust, it was another to trust without doubting at all and that was the big deal.

“He will surely bring you out. Take your burden to the Lord and leave it there” she ended her song and focused on the preacher.

As the church service continued the line of the song ‘if you trust and never doubt he will surely bring you out’ kept ringing in my head.

How could God expect me to trust him without a doubt after all the failures I’d been through?

How could he expect me to put all my eggs into his baskets and trust him to deliver them safely?

I turned to watch my mum as she sat and listened to the sermon unperturbed. She didn’t even disturb herself about the fact that I snatched my hands away from hers while she sang.

Trust in God was a sore spot for me. I was God’s daughter, I read my books obeyed my parents yet I just couldn’t understand why I kept failing. WAEC had even given me a report of F9 all through before. Most of my mates had gotten admission into choice Universities but there I was trying to sit for yet another exam and I was expected to trust and believe God for the best.

Well the song worked as it’s lyrics sunk into my soul. I didn’t want to fail God, I could not cheat nor pay money for good results, neither could I visit any babalawo or collect a magic biro I had no one else but Abba.

So I decided to TRUST WITHOUT DOUBTING and not just that, I decided to carry all my burdens and dump it on Jesus and forget that the problems ever existed. I left it there at his feet.

Did the answer come?
Yes!
Did I get a good result yet?
Yes!

What is that challenge you are going through?
What is that mountain that seems to high to climb or surmount?

Are these challenges greater than YHWH?

Definitely No!

The challenge I would throw to you is that YOU SHOULD LEAVE IT THERE!
DO NOT VISIT IT AGAIN!
TRUST GOD WITHOUT DOUBTING HIS ABILITY!
and watch your problems, burdens roll away.

Here’s the hymn that blessed my heart, I pray it blesses yours too.

If the world from you withhold of its silver and its gold,
And you have to get along with meager fare,
Just remember, in His Word, how He feeds the little bird—
Take your burden to the Lord and leave it there.

Refrain:
Leave it there, leave it there,
Take your burden to the Lord and leave it there;
If you trust and never doubt, He will surely bring you out—
Take your burden to the Lord and leave it there.

If your body suffers pain and your health you can’t regain,
And your soul is almost sinking in despair,
Jesus knows the pain you feel, He can save and He can heal—
Take your burden to the Lord and leave it there.

When your enemies assail and your heart begins to fail,
Don’t forget that God in Heaven answers prayer;
He will make a way for you and will lead you safely through—
Take your burden to the Lord and leave it there.

When your youthful days are gone and old age is stealing on,
And your body bends beneath the weight of care;
He will never leave you then, He’ll go with you to the end—
Take your burden to the Lord and leave it there.
